MiST IN ACTION
DISASTER MANAGEMENT Red MiST |
||
Natural disasters including tsunamis, mud-slides, hurricanes and earthquakes have seen a increase in number in recent years, leaving areas devastated with many casualities. Other disasters may be seen, as ‘man-made’ but need a similar emergency response. As natural disasters strike unexpectedly across the world, MIST units are prepared with aid and medical expertise to respond at short notice. These units are specialists in LIMB RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY, particularly vital in emergency and disaster situations. All the surgeons involved with MIST are experts in dealing with open fractures and limb and bone loss after injury using the Ilizarov technique (link Ilizarov surgery). A ‘Limb Reconstruction Team’ (LRT) consists of all the personnel needed to run a trauma theatre independently. Each team leader and his team have been briefed on disaster management protocols and all have received training in emergency medical treatments and ATLS training. The medical expertise consists of Orthopaedic surgeons specialising in the Ilizarov technique, Plastic Surgeons and Anaesthetists specialising in pain management. Following a catastrophe, an initial assessment team is deployed, with MIST Units on stand-by in their respective countries. After establishing a ‘surgical base’ in the disaster area, teams are sent out on a 2-weekly rotation to work at this base. The rotation of Units will enable the continuity of patient care which is essential in these initial stages and provide a cycle of fresh team members in order to avoid ‘burn-out’ of field staff. LRT’s can be deployed at a later stage in a disaster, to provide surgical expertise in the management of bone infections, non union and malunion of bones, commonly seen after mass casualties. Our surgical expertise can help save limbs and avoid amputations. |

Clinical governance is the cornerstone of the MIST Foundation pledge to deliver a high quality, evidence-based health care. SSI’s audits are paramount when establishing any form of healthcare. We help institutions deliver such services by giving them the tools to carry out audits. Achieving a high clinical excellence, prospective audits and case series have to be performed and submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals. |

Suheal has spent 9 months working in Gaza in 2010, operating on cases, teaching and training the junior surgeons. In Gaza, he help set up lacrosse team. “Following a busy 6-day week working training the local surgeons in Gaza, it was a pleasant change to go on the beach on a Friday. When I first went to the beach, I saw many children playing but nothing organized for them to do. So one Friday I turned up with my lacrosse sticks and started to play with the Gazan kids …they were superb.” “The majority of them took to lacrosse like ducks to water and soon there were many wanting to have a go!” A Lacrosse enthusiast Suheal has recently returned from Palestine but planning his medical and sporting comeback! “I thoroughly enjoyed my Fridays, which were spent on the beach with these fantastic kids. When I return to Gaza, I intend to continue this beach experience with the Gazans…..the next convoy due in Gaza from UK is going to bring another 20 lacrosse sticks so I can start a proper lacrosse school and maybe one day we can have a Palestine team playing in the World Championships!” |
