LATE RESPONSE (Orange MiST)

Following a meeting with President Musharraf of Pakistan, MiST Foundation were allocated Ayub Medical College (AMC), Abbottabad to set up a Limb Reconstruction Unit.

AMC was chosen because of its close proximity to the earthquake’s epicentre, the large number of patients still requiring treatment and thus patients would not have to travel far out of the region for specialist treatment.

The Foundation’s remit was to treat patients and teach and train the local surgeons and allied health care professionals in the art of limb reconstruction and trauma management.

Orange MiST arrived in April 2006 with the team consisting of Orthopaedic trauma surgeons, Plastic surgeon, Scrub Nurses, Radiographer and Medical Physicist, Anaesthetists and Physiotherapist.

For the two weeks stay, the team initiated treatment protocols, taught the doctors nurses with live surgery and ward rounds. 

The Foundation brought £200,000 worth of equipment which was donated to AMC to help in the infrastructure improvements of the hospital.

Six weeks later, a new team arrived at AMC to carry on the work and continue in the training of the locals within the hospital.

The work continued over the next year till 2007, with different teams arriving at AMC and we left a functioning Limb Reconstruction Unit with trained surgeons and nursing staff.

On a sad note, Professor Sohail Sahibzada, the Head of Orthopaedic Department at AMC passed away a few years later. 

His enthusiasm, dedication and humour will not be forgotten and his legacy still continues.
