Mr Van Danh Nguyen, a 54 year old Vietnamese suffering from Ankylosing Spondylitis, travelled over a 100km from the Provinces to attend Out-Patients clinic at Vinmec Hospital, Nha Trang, Vietnam.

Mr Van had already had 2 revision surgeries on his left hip for implant failure and now presented with inability to walk or sleep due to a painful left hip.

Xray after last Revision Surgery     Most recent Xray showing migration of Implant

Comparison of a previous and up to date X-ray revealed migration of the implant and was deemed that an operation for removal was necessary (a Girdlestone Procedure). This procedure would inevitable make the limb shorter, but would allow the patient to be pain free and mobilise with the aid of a walking frame.

Unfortunately, Mr Van had spent a significant amount of money on his previous hip surgeries in Vietnam, so the MiST Foundation agreed to fund his Girdlestone procedure, with Professor Suheal Khan helping during the operation performed in Nha Trang.

The procedure was performed on the 9th June 2020 and Mr Van was discharged after an uneventful recovery 3 days later walking with the aid of a zimmer frame.

MiST Foundation wishes to thank Vinmec, Nha Trang, especially the Chief Operations Officer Ms Pham Thi Minh Thu, for giving permission and allowing the operation to proceed at a significantly reduced price.

Mr Van will now need further complex surgery to be performed on both hips and we will await to see if funding for such an operation will be possible locally.
For any Orthopaedic Surgeon visiting this page, we invite your suggestions for what kind of further procedure is necessary to aid Mr Van walking again.
